Shakara Liddelow-Hunt currently works as a Research Assistant in the Youth Mental Health team and aspires to one day complete her PhD. She secured STARS funding to attend a two-day workshop, Start Talking About Relationships & Sexual Health Training.
This training is designed for Aboriginal community members and people who work with Aboriginal youth to develop their skills to effectively collaborate and communicate with young mob about relationships and sexual health with a particular focus on Aboriginal LGBTQIA+ communities.
This workshop allowed Shakara to expand her training skills and develop training with mob for her project Walkern Katatdjin (Rainbow Knowledge). It also enabled networking opportunities with other industry contacts who also work with Aboriginal youth.
Knowing that there is support here [at The Kids] for the young mob that are coming through is very encouraging.
"Without these opportunities, I would really struggle to do further studies- The Kids does so much Aboriginal research, it is important that there are Aboriginal researchers at the forefront of this work, who are working closely with community. It would be great for our mob to not just be the Research Assistants but Chief Investigators. Supporting this growth and having the capacity to continuously develop staff is a step in the right direction to achieve this one day.”
